Citizenship & Naturalization

Obtaining U.S. citizenship is the ultimate goal for many individuals and families who immigrate to the United States. To become a citizen, immigrants must be eligible and complete the naturalization process. With more than a decade of extensive immigration law experience, citizenship attorney Mustafo Davlatov helps clients complete the required process for becoming a naturalized citizen. Based in Brooklyn, New York, Davlatov Law Firm, P.C. serves clients worldwide, with a primary focus on individuals and families from Central Asia.

Experienced Citizenship Attorney with a Client-Focused Approach

Mustafo Davlatov established his own immigration law firm in 2021, after more than 10 years working as an immigration and citizenship attorney in other law firms. He has always focused his practice on helping individuals and families from Central Asia and Turkey receive immigration assistance from an attorney who understands their roots, culture, and language. Having emigrated from Tajikistan in 2009, Mustafo has special insight into the concerns and issues faced by his clients.

Clients value the empathy and compassion that Mustafo applies in all aspects of his work. His personal dedication to clients and his extensive knowledge and skill have earned him a strong reputation as a client-focused, results-driven immigration and citizenship attorney who is passionate about helping clients successfully navigate the complex immigration system, including the naturalization process.

Mustafo believes it is important for clients to be able to communicate in their own language whenever possible, rather than relying on translation services. Davlatov Law Firm provides legal services in multiple languages. Mustafo and his paralegal team members are fluent in a number of languages, including Tajik, Russian, Uzbek, and Turkish.

U.S. Citizenship

Under United States law, citizenship may be automatic at birth for individuals born in the U.S. or its territories or possessions or born to a U.S. citizen who resides in another country, when specific requirements are met. Immigrants who do not have automatic citizenship may become a citizen by completing the naturalization process, if they are eligible to apply. Obtaining citizenship status comes with a wide range of important rights and responsibilities that cannot be obtained otherwise.

To be eligible for citizenship through naturalization, an individual must be at least 18 years old, have lived lawfully in the U.S. for at least five years (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen), and complete the detailed naturalization process. Other eligibility requirements also apply.

Completing the adjustment of status process and obtaining a green card is a beneficial step toward applying for citizenship. However, while a green card provides specific benefits, it does not confer citizenship. A non-U.S. citizen must go through naturalization to become a citizen. One exception applies to non-citizen children under the age of 18 years, who may automatically become a citizen if a parent successfully completes the naturalization process.

While the law does not require you to be represented by an attorney in the naturalization process, getting qualified, professional legal assistance is strongly recommended. Citizenship attorney Mustafo Davlatov has substantial experience helping clients successfully complete the naturalization process. Without help from a naturalization attorney, you can make mistakes that jeopardize your ability to complete the process. At Davlatov Law Firm, there is no charge for your first consultation, so you have no reason to hesitate to talk with us about citizenship and naturalization.

Naturalization Process

Naturalization is a detailed, complicated process that includes a number of different steps, as well as preparing and submitting extensive documentation and taking specific tests. The first step is determining whether you are eligible to become a citizen through naturalization. That step is best accomplished with help from a citizenship attorney.

Application Submission

If you are eligible, the process begins with preparing and submitting a specific application form to USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services). You must collect and submit detailed documentation with the application and pay a fee to apply. When you count on Davlatov Law Firm for help, we make certain your application is complete, accompanied by all the necessary information, and properly filed.

USCIS Interview and Naturalization Tests

When the preliminary steps (which may include a biometrics test) are finished, USCIS schedules an appointment with you to complete the process. The session includes an interview with a USCIS officer and, unless you are exempted, a naturalization test. The test includes both English language and civics components. You must be able to demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak basic English. The civics test requires you to answer specific questions about American government and history.

Preparing properly for the USCIS interview and tests is absolutely essential. When you get help with naturalization from Davlatov Law Firm, we work closely with you to make certain you are fully prepared for both the interview and test portions of the naturalization process.

Following the interview and tests, you receive notice of the USCIS decision, usually by mail. Your application may be granted, continued, or denied. If granted, the decision means you are eligible for naturalization and can complete the process of taking the Oath of Allegiance in a naturalization ceremony. If your application is Continued or Denied, your citizenship attorney can help you determine what options are available for proceeding.
